A lot of information is available on the internet about Sankranti, its relevance and religious signficance. The above podcast talks about why we eat jaggery, til, sugarcane and groundnut based food items on this occasion.
As the postcast is in hindi, I have translated the gist of it in English here.
Why eat jaggery on Sankranti
Jaggery, sesame seed, groundnut, sugarcane, coconut and various similar types of food items are eaten on the occasion of Makar Sankranti to detoxify and cleanse your liver and provide overall warmth to your body. During this coldest period of the year, eating these food items in the name of festival is essentially a traditional way to enjoy and keep your health in good shape.
Western commode or Squat toilet, which one is better ? You must have read or heard many comparisons and pros and cons of both types of toilet seats or commodes. Let’s take a look at the health benefits of Squat toilet or Indian toilet. Surprisingly, researchers have found many amazing health benefits of this traditional style toilets that are quite popular not just in India but across many countries in Asia.
Is Squat Toilet better than Western Toilet?
Coming straight to the point without beating around the bush, yes it is, but depends on the user. Western toilet seat or commode has been designed keeping in mind the comfort of the user, which essentially deprives the user of many health benefits that he/she would get if a Squat toilet was used. If comfort is your priority, which is true for those suffering from joint pain issue, then western commode is better. If you have no joint pain issue, then go for Indian toilet seat.
Squat position keeps the anorectal wide, or in simple terms, allows straight passage for stool to pass through. This is just the opposite in a western commode, which requires extra strain for the same bowel movement
Squat toilet is more hygienic as your body does not touch the commode
Abdominal muscles are pressed by thighs, which is basically an exercise in itself. It helps in better digestion.
Knees, ankles, toes and back become more flexible, minimizing the chances of joint problems.
Less chances of suffering from piles and appendicitis.
High chances of natural child birth if squat toilet is used throughout pregnancy
Yes, there are ways to convert the western commode into a squat toilet. You can use a Squat toilet stand or squat stool to keep your anal passage in right position for easier defecatation.

Healthy eating is just about health foods, but also about how to spend quality using mealtime in its best possible way while ensuring that food is delicious, healthy and easy-to-digest. Cook together, eat together, stay healthier.
If you’re a parent, you already know that eating healthy foods offers a wealth of mental and physical benefits for your family. Little ones are pretty crafty about sniffing out healthy foods and refusing to eat them though, so what you might not know is how to counter these moves.
Now is the perfect time to get your family’s eating habits back on track and finally convince even the pickiest eaters that healthy foods are delicious. So here are a few crafty tricks from Review Swami to change those mealtime habits for good.
Eat Smarter While Working From Home
As ZenBusiness points out, working from home has numerous advantages, not the least of which is greater access to your own kitchen and pantry — which means greater potential for healthy eating.
If it’s a home breaktime snack you’re craving, instead of relying on processed sugars, try creating your own snacks that incorporate seasonal fruits. You’ll still enjoy that sweetness while also increasing your water intake.
Add some healthy dip in easy-to-squeeze condiment bottles and you’ve got easy self-serve for the kids. Also think about adding some gut-healthy probiotics during these snack breaks, with foods like kimchi or kombucha, to aid your family’s digestive system and even out those moods.
Eat Together to Eat Better
When families eat together, at least three or more times a week, kids develop better eating patterns, choose healthier foods, and are more willing to try new foods, as noted by Goodnet. Older kids also tend to succumb less to peer pressure, and they’re also less likely to use alcohol, drugs, or tobacco and more likely to do better in school. With school out and schedules less busy, try to plan some regular sit-down dinners with your kids.
Cook Together to Stay Healthier
Home-cooked meals are generally healthier because they contain fresher ingredients, less fat and sugar, and fewer calories. When you involve the whole family in creating the menus, shopping, and preparing the food, kids tend to absorb healthy eating facts and habits better. They may even have fun doing so!
Just remember that when cooking with the kids, things can get messy, even if you’re just asking them to hold the phone to show you a new recipe. Consider adding an antimicrobial screen protector to your phone or tablet. It will kill bacteria while protecting your gadget from spills, splashes, and accidental damage.
Add a Little Interest to Mealtimes
Introducing new foods to younger family members? Create a tasting menu with smaller, tidbit portions and invite the kids to touch, smell, and taste each item. Make a series of new, simple recipes and invite everyone to rate or vote on them — favorite new dishes can make a return trip to the table. Cook weekly or monthly themed dinners that feature foods from a different country or dishes inspired by a favorite movie or book. Not only will you keep kids entertained, but you will also keep them eating healthy (without them knowing it).
Eat Somewhere Unexpected
If you want to keep healthy meals interesting, try having a meal in different surroundings.
Spread a blanket on the living room floor for an indoor picnic. When nature cooperates, pack a cooler or basket with a DIY take-out meal of seasonal fruits and veggies and fun (but healthy) picnic foods.
Take a Field Trip to the Farmers’ Market
When you shop at the farmers’ market, you’re supporting local family farmers. But that’s not the only good reason to go! You’ll also get access to fresh produce and goods each week. You can introduce your children to different foods in each growing season. Encourage your kiddos to pick out a vegetable or fruit each trip — it’s a great way to broaden the palate and encourage more adventurous, healthy eating.
Keep Your Cool with Hydrating Foods
Who doesn’t reach for ice cream or Italian ice when the temperatures soar? All that sugar can be bad for your mental health. So, instead, munch on cucumbers, watermelon, peaches, apples, pineapples, leafy greens, lemons, and zucchini. These are effective at helping you feel cooler, and the kids should enjoy the wholesome snacks.
You want your kids to have fun but you also want to keep your family healthy. By using the handy hacks above, you can do both and help your entire family develop habits that will lead them to better food choices all year round. Of course, you can still indulge in your favorite treats but remember moderation is key!
As we get older, our muscles and bones become weaker. It’s simply a fact of life that many seniors have to live with, especially those who have always been athletic and now find themselves having to slow down a little. Age does not determine your energy or fitness level, but it does have an impact on what exercises are safe. As with any age in life, exercise is an important part of overall health and nutrition — perhaps even more so when you’re older and your health is not operating at peak performance levels.
Yoga is a safe and easy enough form of exercise for seniors. It’s ideal for beginners getting into exercise for the first time or former fitness buffs looking for a slower pace. Read on to find out more.
Yoga
Yoga has been an Indian practice for several millennia according to yogigo.com, but the Western practice of yoga is fairly young in comparison. In the late 19th century, the spiritual and physical practice of yoga made its way to the West as a primarily physical practice, but today, many practitioners in modern society incorporate a spiritual component.
Known as meditative yoga, this multi-discipline approach combines the fitness aspects of yoga with its relaxing, spiritual side to bring about physical and mental balance. If you’re curious to learn more about yoga and how you can apply it to your life, author Stephen Cope’s The Wisdom of Yoga (about $15 on Amazon) is a good place to start.
Dedication and Getting Started
The key to making any exercise program work for you is to commit to it. A workout schedule can help you get into a pattern, which will eventually lead to a habit. If you commit to yoga and meditation every morning at 8 a.m., the routine will stick — and MindBodyGreen notes you’ll soon end up with a healthy yoga habit.
A dedicated space in your home can also motivate you to practice yoga daily. Although it is possible to roll out a yoga mat anywhere to practice, dedicated space at home will help you remain committed. Anytime you look at it, you’ll be reminded to start a session.
A clutter-free environment will also help you stay focused, calm and centered without the countless distractions of the things surrounding you. Cleansing your house of clutter helps to clear your living space of bad energy, making room for positive vibes. Most people don’t have a spare room lying around, but you can place your unused belongings into storage to remove a little clutter from your home to make room for your practice. Aside from storing your belongings from the yoga room, you can use the extra space for other furniture that you want to clear out from the house.
Yoga can also improve dental health. Cigna notes that chronic stress can lead to a reduction in healthy oral care habits, but practicing meditative yoga can give your mind the boost it needs to make other components of your health a priority, including simple actions like brushing your teeth and showering. While yoga can improve oral health, you should still find a dentist if you have any chronic issues such as jaw or tooth pain.
Now that you’re ready to start your yoga practice, throw on a video and start a flow. If doing yoga at home is not for you, then it should be easy to find a class or senior group to join. The social aspect of classes could help you stay interested for years to come, elevating you from beginner to expert yogi in no time.
Over optimism can be disastrous if it is not in your control. Defensive pessimism may work better in many situations, as it keeps your ready for unpleasant situations.
Utsuk Joy, the author of ‘Blind Optimism Betrays’ says that we all have grown up assuming that optimism is what makes us successful and prompts us to work harder. However, in recent times, there has been a sharp growth in the number of people who do not agree with blind optimism, as this may not always work. They strongly believe that slighly pessimistic outlook towards whatever you are doing keeps you motivated to acheive your goal in a better way. That is what Defensive Pessimism is all about.
What exactly is defensive pessimism?
Essentially, not being highly optimistic and leaving some scope for unpleasant or not so desirable result of your action can be called defensive pessimism. Though official definition may differ, this is the actual meaning of defensive pessimism. When you are a defensive pessimist, you are concious that results of your action can be unpleasant, therefore you go the extra mile to ensure that it does not happen. Surprisingly, this attitude works wonders and chance of success goes up.
Blind Optimism Betrays
To some extent, yes. This is what Utsuk Joy, the writer of “Blind Optimism Betrays” wants to convey through his book. He has given a nice description of many real life incidents that turned into unpleasant situations due to over-optimism. Whereas, in his view, a slightly pessimistic approach in handling those situations could have yielded better results.
Over Optimism within practical approach
The author, Utsuk Joy has explained how being optimism is good and seems be a time-tested formula, only if it is within your control. If you go into its control, then the result may be disatrous. The key here is to control your optimism with practical thinking. Often, things look good theoretically, but in practical conditions, many other factors come into play, which turn the results in negative direction. That is what one should avoid. Be slighly negative with open eyes and mind, and see the power of defensive pessimism. You can order it now
Yoga is a fantastic way to connect with your body and mind while getting the benefits of exercise. It strengthens lungs and regulates your breathing, lowers your blood pressure, and reduces stress levels. These are just a few of the benefits that you’ll gain from your yoga practice. If you’ve dabbled in a bit of yoga and are curious about how you can take your sessions to the next level, Review Swami has some great tips for you. Here are four things that can boost your yoga routine and turn it into something more.
Try a New Class
Trying a new type of yoga class can be a massive boost to your yoga routine. There are many reasons to consider it, but probably the most critical one is that it increases the overall benefits you see from practicing yoga. You could attend at a different time of day, try a different type of yoga, or attend a class that adds in some new kind of aspect to the practice. Taking new yoga classes can also introduce different props to your routine, such as yoga blocks and straps.
Set Goals
Setting goals is a useful practice in
general, but we often forget to use it for more than just work or significant
life instances. Goals can be a helpful thing in all parts of life, from
finances to health to stress management. When it comes to your yoga practice,
setting goals — like losing belly fat — can help you take it to the
next level. The best way to do this is to use a tracker or journal. Many times,
there are apps that will work for this purpose, which
can be especially handy for those on the go. Using the apps during your yoga
routine will help you remember what you’ve accomplished and what you want to
work on next time.
In addition to using goal apps on your phone, you can also track your goals and progress with a wearable smartwatch. Rubber or nylon bands protect them from moisture even if you’re sweating through a tough workout, and you can switch out the band for a metal or leather option between fitness sessions for a sleeker everyday look. If you’re in the market for a new device, keep in mind that you can take advantage of year-round savings and not just holiday-specific deals. With a new phone or smartwatch, you can stay on top of your yoga goals without worrying about app crashes or slow download speeds.
Don’t Compare Yourself to Others
Comparison is one of the things that can ruin your yoga practice faster than anything else. It can prevent you from moving on to the next level and keep you from learning to feel confident, which can also prevent some of the benefits of yoga from being realized. Confidence comes with practice, as does learning and perfecting the poses and trying new things. Everyone’s body is different, and everyone will move at a different pace. You aren’t in the same place as the person practicing next to you, so why compare yourself? Be proud of what your body can do and pump yourself up for the next level.
Leave Your Comfort Zone
When you’re ready to take your yoga practice to the next level, leaving your comfort zone is essential. Maybe you’re not comfortable wearing tighter fitting clothing or sitting at the front of the class or trying something new. If you decide never to do these things, you will limit your ability to move forward in your yoga progress. Wearing fitted clothing may help a pose come together easier, and sitting in the front may help you master a pose faster. Trying something new may mean finding a new love for a different aspect of yoga that allows you to blossom. But you’ll never know if you don’t leave your comfort zone.
Putting Them All Together
Now that you’ve learned four things that can help you take your yoga practice to the next level, it’s time to put them all together and give it a try. Remember, you are in control of how well you do and how far you go. Don’t give up!
Not long ago, a home remedy for increasing oxygen level was doing the rounds on social media. It was a simple method of wrapping some camphor, clove, ajwain and eucalyptis oil in a piece of cloth. If increasing oxygen level was so simple, the impact of Covid-19 wave 2 would not have been so severe.
Increase Oxygen Level Naturally
It goes without saying that Yoga and breathing exercise, various techniques of Pranayama are highly effective in increasing the efficiency of lungs and increasing oxygen leve. However, it is not practical to expect immediate results if you are already suffering from Corona or Covid-19. Regular practice of Pranayama or simply deep breathing early in the morning helps in increating overall oxygen intake of the practitioner. It is never too late to start a health way of life, unless you are bed-ridden or already suffering from health issue.
Check Your Oxygen Level at Home
If you suspect that your oxygen level is low, then consider buying an oxymeter, which are easily available at all medical stores. You can also order them online. However, I’d say that you can also check is at home an get an approximate idea of your oxygen level. It is not an accurate method but works fine. You can compare this method to checking your fuel in car when your fuel meter stops working. By opening the gas tank and checking the level of gas in the tank, you get a fair idea of the quantity of gas left in the fuel tank. By doing simple math, you can calculate how far your car will go on that fuel. Similarly, you can roughly check your oxygen level.
Oxygen Level Test Without Oxymeter
Simply inhale and exhale completely once. Inhale as much as you can and hold your breath, and start counting. If you can count upto 50 or 60 without releasing your breath, your oxygen level is fine. If you can count only up to 20 or 30, you can still give natural methods a try. If you cannnot count even upto 10 -15 while holding your breath, you are running short on oxygen. Seek medical help immediately.
Prone Position to Increase Oxygen Level
This is one of the most effective, tried, tested and doctor recommended method for those who need to increase their oxygen level fast while medical oxygen is not avaiable. The method is quite simple and can be tried by anyone. All you need to do is lie on stomach facing down and put 2 pillow under your chest and belly, one pillow under you neck and on pillow under your ankles.
How Long to Stay in one Prone Position
You can stay up to 30 minutes in one prone position and then change the position to opposite side alternatively. In fact, this works wonders and there are intances, which prove that people can bring back their oxygen level to normal by simply staying in prone position if oxygen is not avaiable. However, it varies from person to person and individual’s overall health condition, so you cannot ignore the need ot medical oxygen. Take expert medical advice to suit your condition.
