Meditation and Focus

I am pretty sure that you are aware of the fact that meditation helps in improving focus. But focus on what? That is the question, you must try to answer before you try to focus on something. Though meditation practice itself is about improving focus, its advantages can be seen and felt in all spheres and activities of your life.

How long can you focus on anything?

As the story goes, that once Andrew Carnegie was suspected to have done something wrong to become rich quickly. American government wanted to know how he amassed huge wealth in such a short time. He was called and asked the same question because nothing was found illegal or wrong in whatever he did. His answer was simple that he could focus on anything for 5 minutes without any distraction. The questioning team said what was so special about it, anybody could do that. An experiment was set-up to check focus span of those questioning him. Let alone 5 minutes, nobody was able to focus for more than few seconds. So, that was his secret of success.

Your ability to focus can help you succeed

Coming back to the purpose of this post, I must say that regular meditation can help you improve your focus immensely. It will reflect in your action and results that you get from improved focus. Whether in academics, profession, sports or whatever you do, improved focus will work wonders for you. You can also use meditation accessories to start your sessions.

Sun Salutation to start your day with

Though yoga in any form is good for mental and physical health, you need a starting point to incorporate it in your daily life. Starting your day with Sun Salutation of Surya Namaskar can help you set your pace for better focus and high energy throughout the day. Basically, when you focus on your breathing along with 12 poses of Sun Salutation, you are in sync with the nature. That is what is needed for overall health.

Declutter your mind

In the age of internet and cell phones, we are bombarded with a lot of unnecessary information, which pass through our mind and disrupts our mind. Though using digital media is a necessity, make sure that you do not focus too much on information that is neither useful or relevant for you. Instead, read some spiritual books or texts. This will declutter your mind and help you focus better on things that are important for you.

Your food can also be the culprit

In many northern parts of India, especially in Punjab and Haryana, it is said, Jaisa Ann waisa Mann. It simply means that the type of food you eat moulds your mind or mood. In other words, if you eat a lot of junk or unhealthy food then your mind will also be full of junk. Obviously, you’ll not be able to focus properly. Its opposite is also true, i.e. if you eat healthy, nutritious and balanced food, then your focus will also be good.

So, what you must do is think what is required for you to improve focus. Start with breathing exercise first and then give meditation a try. You can also start with VR meditation.

Increasing Oxygen Level-Truth of Home Remedies

Not long ago, a home remedy for increasing oxygen level was doing the rounds on social media. It was a simple method of wrapping some camphor, clove, ajwain and eucalyptis oil in a piece of cloth. If increasing oxygen level was so simple, the impact of Covid-19 wave 2 would not have been so severe.

Increase Oxygen Level Naturally

It goes without saying that Yoga and breathing exercise, various techniques of Pranayama are highly effective in increasing the efficiency of lungs and increasing oxygen leve. However, it is not practical to expect immediate results if you are already suffering from Corona or Covid-19. Regular practice of Pranayama or simply deep breathing early in the morning helps in increating overall oxygen intake of the practitioner. It is never too late to start a health way of life, unless you are bed-ridden or already suffering from health issue.

Check Your Oxygen Level at Home

If you suspect that your oxygen level is low, then consider buying an oxymeter, which are easily available at all medical stores. You can also order them online. However, I’d say that you can also check is at home an get an approximate idea of your oxygen level. It is not an accurate method but works fine. You can compare this method to checking your fuel in car when your fuel meter stops working. By opening the gas tank and checking the level of gas in the tank, you get a fair idea of the quantity of gas left in the fuel tank. By doing simple math, you can calculate how far your car will go on that fuel. Similarly, you can roughly check your oxygen level.

Oxygen Level Test Without Oxymeter

Simply inhale and exhale completely once. Inhale as much as you can and hold your breath, and start counting. If you can count upto 50 or 60 without releasing your breath, your oxygen level is fine. If you can count only up to 20 or 30, you can still give natural methods a try. If you cannnot count even upto 10 -15 while holding your breath, you are running short on oxygen. Seek medical help immediately.

Prone Position to Increase Oxygen Level

This is one of the most effective, tried, tested and doctor recommended method for those who need to increase their oxygen level fast while medical oxygen is not avaiable. The method is quite simple and can be tried by anyone. All you need to do is lie on stomach facing down and put 2 pillow under your chest and belly, one pillow under you neck and on pillow under your ankles.

Standard Prone Position

How Long to Stay in one Prone Position

You can stay up to 30 minutes in one prone position and then change the position to opposite side alternatively. In fact, this works wonders and there are intances, which prove that people can bring back their oxygen level to normal by simply staying in prone position if oxygen is not avaiable. However, it varies from person to person and individual’s overall health condition, so you cannot ignore the need ot medical oxygen. Take expert medical advice to suit your condition.

Yoga based cardiac rehabilitation highly successful

Have you had a heart attack recently, and want to prevent further attacks? You guessed it right, we are talking about cardiac rehabilitation program, but not the conventional one.  It is the natural version of it. Yoga based cardiac rehabilitation, which is neither expensive nor inconvenient. A study was conducted by Indian Council for Medical Research and Medical Research Council (UK). Its result was presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Session in Chicago.

Natural therapy for heart attack patients

The researchers studied 4000 patients who suffered heart attacks and were   discharged from hospitals. The participants were asked to undergo a structured YogaCaRe programme as an alternative to or additional cardiac rehabilitation programme.

What is Yoga CaRe (Cardiac Rehabilitation)

As the name suggests, it is a care programme for cardiac patients who have had a heart attack. The programme consists of 13 yoga sessions, which include:

  • Meditation
  • Breathing exercises
  • Heart friendly yoga poses
  • Lifestyle advice to be followed after a heart attack

Generic yoga plus modern lifestyle

The programme is essentially a combination of generic yoga and modern lifestyle practices that can be modified or improved for better health. As yoga can be practised by anyone following any faith or religion, the programme has been designed keeping in mind that it is suitable for all sects and faiths.

The Yoga-CaRe Trial, the largest trial on yoga as well as cardiac rehabilitation, has shown the potential of yoga to be an alternative to the conventional CR programmes and address the unmet needs of cardiac rehabilitation for patients in low-and middle-income countries. It is safe, relatively inexpensive, does not need an elaborate infrastructure, culturally acceptable and improves quality of life.

Benefits of deep breathing

I’d like to mention that despite breathing being the most essential body function, its importance is often ignored as it happens naturally. What really makes the difference is deep and conscious breathing, which we often don’t care about. Those who can make time for deep breathing every day realise and feel the positive difference due to:

  • High energy levels
  • Improved blood circulation
  • Improved digestion
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Reduced acidity
  • Improved posture
  • Calm mind and reduction in stress level
  • Natural painkilling effect

Though taking deep breath in the morning hours is most beneficial, you can do it anytime of the day, as long as the air is fresh and not polluted. There are many breathing techniques, which we’ll cover in another post.

Deep breathing to lower blood pressure

As we hardly breath deeply, we usually don’t get the maximum possible benefits of deep breathing. Those with high blood pressure can notice remarkable difference in their blood pressure after practicing deep breathing regularly. All you need to do is make time, some 5-10 minutes every morning to breathe deeply.

Does yoga need to be promoted?

It goes without saying that Yoga and its benefits  do not need any emphasis as the western world was already made aware of its benefits first by Swami Vivekanand in late 19th century and early 20th century. This set of ancient Indian practices and disciplines again caught the fancy of the western world during 1970s and 1980s in various forms, especially physical exercises which keep you fit and healthy. However, It will not be out of context to say that Yoga is not just a set of Asanas, postures and physical exercises, but a lot more than those. Yoga helps you connect with the almighty and discover your real potential by creating a perfect harmony between your mind and body. It all depends upon how willing and dedicated you are to benefit from Yoga’s unlimited power.

Why yoga works for everyone

  • No external equipment is required.
  • Yoga can be performed anywhere, no special set-up is required. In fact, the more natural surrounding your are in, the better.
